BIOGRAPHY
11 time DMA Recipient for “Outstanding Jazz Vocalist”, and DBMA recipient for “ Best Jazz Vocalist”, Native-Detroiter, singer and songwriter, Sky Covington, known for her vocal delivery and improvisational skills. Along with her deep love for traditional jazz; her phrasing is unique and intoxicating, enrapturing her audience, with every single note. This year, Sky celebrates 20 years of performing her jazz production, The Billie Holiday Revue, also releasing her first jazz CD, Club Crescendo Vol.3, released this year. Sky also shares a residency with jazz greats Club Crescendo at Woodbridge Pub.
Sky Covington’s musical portrait of neo soul is one painted with a band of enchanting brushes, and one that captures the picture of a truly unique artist.
A native-Detroit singer/songwriter, Sky is a multi-award winning musician, whose many distinguished honors include nominations and wins in multiple categories of the Detroit Music Awards and Detroit Black Music Awards. She has opened for and toured with other Detroit notables as Straight Ahead, The Original Vandellas and Kenny “Moodymann” Dixon Jr.
Her influences reflect a well-heeled and varied palette, from Aretha Franklin to Erikah Badu, from midcentury jazz vocalists and 70s disco and funk to current house and world music. Whatever the music needs, she gives.
Raised on the west side of Detroit, Sky has been writing and performing most of her life. Like many free-spirits, she had an unconventional but impressionable start.
Sky is currently preparing for the release of her new album, the independently produced “Club Crescendo.” Although the record leans toward a more jazz-fused sound, the release is not entirely a departure from her earlier styles; She has already been named DMA’s Outstanding Jazz Vocalist two years in a row, DBMA’s 2010 Female Jazz Artist of the Year.
Sky’s distinctive intuition flows throughout the album, but not least of all on tracks like “Loww, Loww, Love,” which speaks like a meditative mantra on one of Sky’s frequent subjects: love…sometimes forlorn, sometimes mysterious, and sometimes sated.
What makes Sky stand out as an artist is that it’s not about what she says, but how she says it; not about what she feels, but how? And her ability to wrap that up in something sexy and cool and share it with us through her music. It’s what makes her portrait a beauty like none other.
